Beginning in 2025, as stated in “Race Rules & Standards”, all race participants are required to wear certain safety clothing. These requirements will be strictly enforced.
CREW members supporting individual runners AND team DRIVERS:
Each MUST wear an ANSI-2 compliant garment during the entire race, day and night, and it must be YELLOW in color. Examples of ANSI-2 compliant garments are shown below. IN ADDITION, during nighttime hours FLASHING COLORED LIGHTS, front and rear, that are visible at a distance, must be worn whenever outside the support vehicle.
TEAM runners who are not actively running:
When outside their vehicle, anytime day or night, non-running team members must also wear a YELLOW ANSI-2 garment. IN ADDITION, during nighttime hours FLASHING COLORED LIGHTS, front and rear, that are visible at a distance, must also be worn.
ACTIVE RUNNERS and ACTIVE PACERS:
Active runners and active pacers are not required to wear ANSI-2 during the day, although it is highly recommended. During nighttime hours, however, runners and pacers MUST wear garments that provides 360 degree reflectivity. They may wear reflective items of their choosing, although ANSI-2 compliant clothing is highly advised. IN ADDITION, flashing colored lights, front and rear, that are highly visible, MUST also be worn.
EXPLAINING “ANSI-2” AND WHERE TO BUY
In addition to the bright yellow color, highly reflective tape runs vertically and continuously along both sides of the chest, across the shoulders and down the back, with another running horizontally below chest level, 360 degrees around the body. ANSI-2 compliant garments offered for sale will specify that they meet that standard. Examples of a tee shirt and a lightweight vest are shown below.
ANSI-2 compliant clothing is readily available. Here are examples of reasonably priced online vendors: HiVisSupply.com, SafetySmartGear.com, ReflectiveApparel.com, uline.com
ANSI Class 2 Technical Design and performance requirements:
· Amount of reflective material: Class 2 safety clothing must have at least 775 square inches of background material and 201 square inches of reflective material. This ensures the wearer is visible from 360 degrees (i.e., all sides).
· Width of reflective material: The reflective material used on the vests should be at least 1.375 inches wide. This width is essential to ensure visibility from a distance and in various light conditions.
· Placement of reflective material: The reflective material on Class 2 safety clothing must be placed around the middle of the vest and over the shoulder. This placement ensures that the wearer is visible from all sides (including the back and front) and that the reflective material is seen at the body's highest and most visible points.
· Performance: The reflective material must meet performance criteria for visibility, ensuring that it is highly reflective and visible in daylight and under illumination by vehicle headlights in the dark.
REMINDER: Rules regarding safety clothing and nighttime lighting will be strictly enforced. In addition to penalizing runners not in compliance, severe penalties will also be levied against the runner or team when crew (or team drivers) are without proper gear. Be safe; comply fully with these standards.
