Relay Team Corner

KEYS100®

Relays are a blast. You get to race 50 or 100 miles in the Keys without running them all yourself.

Military Team Competition

The Military Team Competition returns for 2026.

On May 16, 2026, which is Armed Forces Day in the United States, military teams will compete in the overall race and against each other for special bragging rights.

The winning military team will receive a special award and will also remain fully eligible for overall relay race awards.

To qualify as a military team, at least 5 team members must be on active duty and serving full time.

Why Run a Relay?

KEYS100 team relays are a great way to participate in the race if you want the challenge and excitement of the event without taking on the full ultra distance on your own.

Unlike more traditional relay races with pre-assigned legs, KEYS100 gives teams the flexibility to create their own race-day plan and adjust it as needed.

Build Your Own Race Strategy

Your team decides how many segments each member runs and how far each person goes.

  • Team members do not have to run the same number of legs
  • Team members do not have to run the same number of miles
  • You do not have to stay in a fixed order
  • Your race plan can be changed during the race if conditions change

This flexibility allows newer runners to take on less distance while more experienced runners may choose to take on more.

Segments are typically 2 to 4 miles in length, but one key exception is the Seven Mile Bridge leg, which must be run in its entirety by the same runner.

Team Size

  • 100-mile relay teams may have up to 6 runners
  • 50-mile relay teams may have up to 3 runners
  • Smaller teams are allowed in both competitions

There is no handicap or scoring adjustment for smaller teams.

Need Another Runner?

If your team is short a runner or two, use the race Facebook pages to look for someone who may be a good fit.

When building a team, make sure your goals align. A team looking to enjoy the experience at a modest pace may not be a good fit for someone focused only on winning.

Many relay teams have formed this way, and those connections often turn into lasting friendships.

Make a Weekend of It

KEYS100 is more than just a race. Teams are encouraged to watch the Orientation video, understand what to expect for race day and the full weekend, and plan to stay in Key West if possible.

Enjoy the finish line celebration on the beach and come back for the Awards program on Sunday, where more than 200 winners are recognized under the big tent.

Important Pages to Review

Every topic on the website is there for a reason, but these are especially important for relay teams:

  • Orientation
  • Race Day Tips
  • FAQ
  • Crew Vehicle recommendations and limitations
  • Race weekend calendar
  • Runner Meet-Up Locations
  • Race Rules & Standards

One Last Thought

Over the years, many relay runners have been inspired by the individual runners they meet along the route. It is not unusual for team and individual runners to share a few miles together and leave the weekend thinking, “Maybe I should try that 50K next year.”
